Aamoo (Bee) Day

Join us in raising awareness of the critical role aamoog (bees) and other pollinators play in ecosystems and food security. This day highlights the need to protect pollinators, which are essential for biodiversity and sustaining agriculture. The celebration continues the ongoing efforts to protect these vital manidoons (insects), which are threatened by human and agricultural development, helping to preserve biodiversity.

📅‍ Date: Wednesday, May 20, 2026
🕥‍ Time: 10:30AM – 3:00PM
📍‍ Location: Sagamok Greenhouse

Raise awareness of the threats to pollinators—such as pesticide use and habitat loss—and to promote efforts to improve their survival conditions.

Aamoog (bees) contribute directly to food security, with about 90% of wild flowering plant species and 75% of agricultural crops relying on animal pollination.

How to get involved:

  • Plant a Pollinator-Friendly Gitigaan (Garden): Plant nectar-bearing waabigwaniin (flowers) and native ozaagakiig (plants).
  • Support Local Beekeepers: Buy local honey and products from nearby beekeepers.
  • Reduce Pesticide Use: Avoid chemical pesticides in your garden to keep pollinators safe.
  • Host Educational Events: Organize activities for schools or communities about the importance of bees.
  • Create Aamoo (Bee) Habitats: Set up a "bee hotel" or leave small areas of the garden wild to provide nesting sites.
