Learn Ice Safety - Have Fun and Stay Safe This Winter!

Before You Go Out

  • Dress warmly - wear multiple layers!
  • Bring a rope.
  • Always tell someone where you're going.
  • Bring a friend!

Check the Ice!

  • 0-3" - Unsafe, stay off!
  • 4" - One person with personal gear
  • 5" - Small group, spread out
  • 6" - Snowmobile or ATV
  • 9" - Small automobile
  • 12" - Pickup truck or SUV

Keep in mind that ice thickness varies! Watch out for holes and pressure cracks and avoid open water. Spread out if you are in a group.

What to Do in an Emergency

If someone you are with falls through, call 911 immediately and coach them through the steps in the video. Extend a long stick, pole, or rope to help them, but do not try to approach the place where they fell.
