Learn Ice Safety - Have Fun and Stay Safe This Winter!
Before You Go Out
- Dress warmly - wear multiple layers!
- Bring a rope.
- Always tell someone where you're going.
- Bring a friend!
Check the Ice!
- 0-3" - Unsafe, stay off!
- 4" - One person with personal gear
- 5" - Small group, spread out
- 6" - Snowmobile or ATV
- 9" - Small automobile
- 12" - Pickup truck or SUV
Keep in mind that ice thickness varies! Watch out for holes and pressure cracks and avoid open water. Spread out if you are in a group.

If someone you are with falls through, call 911 immediately and coach them through the steps in the video. Extend a long stick, pole, or rope to help them, but do not try to approach the place where they fell.
