On October twenty-first, Sagamok marked a major milestone in our work toward jurisdiction over child wellbeing. The Sagamok Negotiation Committee and representatives from Canada and Ontario formally launched negotiations with ceremony, a gift presentation, and introductions of all parties.
This gathering marked the official beginning of negotiations toward Sagamok assuming responsibility for all aspects of child wellbeing.
It builds on several months of preparation. Here’s a look back at the steps that brought us to this milestone.
Koognaasewin 2026 Timeline:
• March 2026 – Sagamok declared its intent to assert jurisdiction over child wellbeing through Bill C-92 with the Governments of Canada and Ontario.
• March – June 2026 – Sagamok established its Negotiation Committee and assigned Roger Jones as Lead Negotiator.
• June 2026 – Sagamok met for the first time with Canada and Ontario Officials for a preliminary meeting. At this time, Canada had not yet assigned a Lead Negotiator.
• September 2026 – Canada assigned a Lead Negotiator.
• September – October 2026 – Trilateral and Bilateral meetings scheduled to begin briefing Canada and Ontario on Sagamok’s Koognaasewin Law and Service Delivery Model.
• September 2026 – Management began the process of creating tools, workflows, and processes.
