Sagamok’s Koognaasewin initiative is working towards bringing the care and support of our children back to community by developing the necessary programming and processes that will ensure Sagamok successfully achieves jurisdiction for child welfare and child wellbeing.

With the North Shore Tribal Council's child wellbeing initiative completed in June, 2026, Sagamok continues to advance our own Koognaasewin Law and reclaim Indigenous jurisdiction over child wellbeing.
Our Koognaasewin (Child Wellbeing) Law will guide how Child and Family Services delivers comprehensive, culturally grounded programming and supports to ensure our children and their families remain in the community and receive all of the necessary services they need in order to remain connected to their community, family, and culture. The Koognaasewin Law will also help guide us in building better relationships with regional and provincial providers and agencies that are providing services, supports or programming to our children living beyond Sagamok.

An important part of our Koognaasewin Law, the System Design maps out how Sagamok’s Child and Family program will work together and with other community partners and departments to ensure our children and families have the services and supports they need to stay safe and healthy.
