Message from The Chief’s Desk

Aanii kinaweyaa,

As you may be aware, in October 2025, Justice Myers of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered that the legal fees in the Robinson Huron Treaty Annuities Case be reduced. Although an appeal has been launched, the RHTLF has begun thedisbursement to communities of the $232 million plus interest that the legal team had already set aside to return to communities.
Sagamok Council has had discussions on the allocation of those funds. A number of options were suggested by community members and council. Through much deliberation, Council has decided to maintain the community’s previous direction and distribute funds in accordance with the original decision by community of 70% per capita distribution, and 30% collective. While we acknowledge that it’s difficult to meet the expectations of all members given the wide array of suggestions brought forward, council felt this was a most fair and appropriate approach as possible to support balancing the suggestions around collective and individual considerations.
As we have now received the funds from the RHTLF, and as with all previous payments received, Sagamok expects to begin those distributions immediately. Eligible Sagamok registered individuals can expect to receive $3,078 per individual. Payments will begin this week. That amount will be put into the minor’s trust for those under the age of 18.
