Air in the Distribution System | Aug 25, 2026

If your water is milky or cloudy, it's most likely due to trapped air. Air in the water is NOT a health concern and does not make the water unsafe to consume. Tiny air bubbles can make water look white, cloudy, or milky.

Why Does Air Get Into the System?

  • Water main repairs or maintenance
  • Watermain breaks or interruptions
  • Changes in water pressure or demand
  • Hydrant flushing & system flushing
  • Opening & closing of valves
  • Work on watermains, services, or other infrastructure

When air becomes trapped in the watermain, it can travel through the system and reach or your home or business.

What Is the Department Doing?

Our operators are continuing to flush the distribution system. As waster moves through the system, the trapped air will be released. Continued flushing and normal water use will help remove the air

You may notice cloudy or milky water while this is happening.

What Should I Do?

  1. Turn on a cold water tap.
  2. Let the water run for several minutes.
  3. Fill a clear glass of water and let it sit.
  4. The water should gradually clear as the air escapes.

Please Contact Us If:

  • The water does not clear after sitting.
  • The water has a colour other than white/cloudy.
  • The water has an unusual odour or taste.
  • You have any other concerns.
