Bear Found Deceased at Landfill Site

A dead bear was found at the landfill on August 16–17, 2025. Evidence suggests it was shot and abandoned, which is illegal.

Offenders could face up to a $25,000 fine, one year in prison, or both.

Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997, S.O. 1997, c. 41
Abandonment of meat
36 (1) A hunter or trapper who kills game wildlife other than a furbearing mammal shall not abandon it if its flesh may become unsuitable for human consumption. 2009, c. 33, Sched. 22, s. 2 (18).
Offence97 (1) A person who contravenes any provision of this Act or the regulations is guilty of an offence.
Penalty102 (1) A person convicted of an offence under this Act is liable to a fine of not more than $25,000, to imprisonment for a term of notmore than one year, or to both.

This type of behaviour is not good hunting practice, and it goes against our traditional value of respect for all living things.

If anyone has information regarding who may be responsible for killing the bear, please contact APS at 1-888-310-1122 or Crimestoppers at 705-222-8477.
