Small steps can make everyday life safer. National Senior Safety Week is a reminder to prevent falls, recognize scams, and make our homes and communities safer while supporting independence and respecting personal choices.
Everyday Safety Tips
- Prevent slips and falls. Keep walkways clear of clutter and cords. Remove loose rugs orsecure them with non-slip backing. Wipe up spills promptly.
- Light the way. Use good lighting on stairs and night lights between the bedroom and bathroom. Use sturdy handrails and properly installed bathroom grab bars.
- Prepare for slippery weather. Wear footwear with good traction. Keep steps and outdoor paths clear of leaves, snow, and ice. Ask for help when conditions are unsafe.
- Pause before you pay. Be cautious of unexpected calls or messages demanding money orsecrecy—even if the caller sounds familiar. Hang up and verify the requestusing a number you already trust.
- Protect your information. Do not share passwords, banking PINs, or verification codes with unexpected callers. Avoid links and attachments in suspicious messages.
- Check fire and carbon monoxide safety. Maintain working alarms and follow the manufacturer’s testing instructions. Plan and practice an escape route, including any assistance you may need. If a fire or carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get outside and call 911 from a safe location.
- Stay connected. Arrange regular check-ins with someone you trust. Keep a phone and emergency contact numbers within easy reach. Offer help with safety tasks without taking over another person’s decisions.
