Gweyaksijigewin Teg Community Justice Program

The Community Justice Program is guided by the seven grandfather teachings, which provide a foundation for Mino-Bimaadizwin (living a good life). These teachings are as follows: Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom), Zaagi’idiwin (Love), Minaadendamowin (Respect), Aakode’ewin (Bravery), Gwayakwaadiziwin (Honesty), Dabaadendiziwin (Humility) and Debwewin (Truth).

Our team works closely with internal departments and external agencies, including Crown Attorney’s office, OPP, APS, and Legal Aid Ontario. The Community Justice Office serves as a monthly meeting location for Probation Services, Elizabeth Fry Society, and Legal Aid Ontario.

By-Law Enforcement

We support the review, development, and enforcement of by-laws in the community. Our focus is on community engagement and education around topics such as dog registration and pet owner responsibilities. Twice a year, we partner with the Ontario Veterinary College to host a series of free/low-cost vet clinics right here in Sagamok!

Miwdoodaa Mino Maadiziwin Diversion Program

We facilitate an intervention service that includes Miwdoodaa Mino Maadiziwin “Let’s Carry a Good Life” Diversion Program; a volunteer pre and post diversion program for youth and adults. It offers the opportunity to have charges diverted; to have charges resolved by way of a justice circle. Individuals are involved in the development of their own healing and wellness plan as they have accepted responsibility for their actions in accordance with their referral to the Diversion Program. Upon completing the healing and wellness plan, the charges may be stayed or withdrawn. Non-compliance with a healing and wellness plan may result in resumption of the prosecution process.

Anishinaabe Aasziwin Dbaaknige Ogimaawin Victims Program

The Anishnaabe Aadziwin Dbaaknige Ogimaawin Victims Program is a support program to assist victims of crime, including victims of the residential school system.

This program offers:
1.referrals and connections to victim services available within Sagamok as well as with external community partners;

2.an opportunity to create a healing and wellness plan with victims to restore their sense of safety and well-being;

3.and assistance with completing forms and victim impact statements.

Court Support and Legal Aid

Our team assists with in-person court proceedings and appearances that are conducted remotely via video conferencing. The Community Justice office can facilitate remote court appearances by providing a meeting space and video conferencing equipment. There is a Free Legal Aid Clinic at our office one day a month, with availability for up to four appointments. Legal Aid clinic dates are shared in advance on all of Sagamok’s communication channels, including the Digital Billboards, Monthly Newsletter, and Members of Sagamok Facebook Group.

Renzo Caron - Director of Community Justice

Aanii. On June 9th, 2025 I started as Director of Community Justice. I am a grandson of Florence and Peter Trudeau; and cherish the memories I have of them and of what my mother and others have shared about my grandparents. Aside from work, returning to serve the community of Sagamok is where I am continuing to learn about and from family and our community.

I was called to the bar of British Columbia (1996), Alberta (2002) and Ontario (2024). About half of my career has been in private practice and the other half as in-house advisory, managerial and executive positions. Prior to law, I studied social work and worked in the social services field. I look forward to the work ahead and meeting those members of our community I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting.
